After resolving payment struggles on their Mexico trip with Airbnb's split payments feature, Miza and Esther created a content series about their travels. They turned to Patreon to fund their venture and connect with fans but found the platform's basic search function limited their reach to potential Patrons.
Our interviews led us to synthesize data and uncover two key insights
These findings, along with the tendency of users to discover Patreon creators on external platforms like YouTube, emphasize the need to enhance creator discoverability within Patreon itself.
1.
Community strength
2.
Filtering options
We designed an intuitive Discovery flow for non-logged-in users to explore and engage with creators seamlessly, fostering effortless exploration without requiring an account.
The Discovery page simplifies finding new creators through various sections: Last Search, Trending Creators, New on Patreon, Live Now, and Shorts. Customize your search using filters for media type, categories, and popularity to find content tailored to your preferences, from podcasts to visual art and more.
After applying filters, you'll see a curated list of creators relevant to your interests. These creators offer content that aligns with your search criteria.
If you're feeling adventurous, click on the Surprise Me button for random content suggestions. This feature is perfect for when you want to explore something unexpected and expand your horizons.
We've enhanced discoverability with an updated UI, featuring a new right-side recommendation panel. The "Suggestions for You" section offers personalized recommendations based on user interests and interactions, enabling seamless content exploration without leaving the page.
We asked 10 testers to perform a series of tasks on Maze and found 2 key insights from our testers that we know we can improve:
Search confusion
To simplify the search experience, we removed filter chips and focused on a streamlined search bar and filter bar. This update eliminates confusion and enables users to find and refine queries with ease.
Expecting new videos after clicking “not for me”
Responding to user expectations, we'll add a feature to refresh content after clicking "Not for me," offering new suggestions or alternative content based on user feedback. This iterative update aims to improve satisfaction and engagement.
Key takeaways
1.
Embracing agility in design is essential for navigating mid-project changes, such as Figma UI updates or new features. Resilience and flexibility enable us to adapt and maintain momentum, transforming challenges into opportunities for refinement.
2.
Effective design scheduling is key for meeting deadlines. Incorporating slack time for unforeseen issues, pre-blocking tester availability, and maintaining alignment through calls and focused work sessions help keep projects on track and synchronized.
3.
Figma frustrations are common in design, often causing head-scratching moments. These experiences keep us grounded, fostering resilience, adaptability, and unique problem-solving skills, ultimately strengthening our design expertise.
The Discovery page aims to boost user engagement and creator support on Patreon. Key metrics to measure its success include New User Registration Rate from improved discovery, Engagement Metrics tracking interactions, Conversion Rate turning new users into patrons, and Creator Impact evaluating growth for lower-visibility creators.
In addition to metric analysis, we will iterate designs to refine the "Surprise me" pop-up and address items from our design backlog. This includes improving onboarding flow for new sign-ups and enhancing community features to strengthen connections between users and creators, ensuring continuous platform evolution and long-term user satisfaction.
Once again, major thank you to the teachers at Memorisely for their guidance and to Esther for being an wonderful teammate.
